Santa Cruz with the Axleys

Paul, Loni, Ava and Hanna came to visit us this weekend and they brought some pretty good weather with them...85 and sunny in the middle of November...oh how I love California. We took them to Santa Cruz and hung out on the beach and walked around the Boardwalk.

Jayden and his books

In the last couple of weeks, Jayden has become obsessed with books. All day long he will pick up a book, bring it over to me and say "eh eh". If I don't read it to him right away, he will start to scream and throw a tantrum. His most favorite part of reading the books is changing the page. In fact, I don't think he actually listens as I'm reading him the book, he just stands and waits in anticipation of changing the page. It's so funny to watch because he changes each page with such conviction. And when we're finished reading the book, he will clap his hands, and then the moment I put it down, he will pick it back up, say "eh eh" and expect me to read it all over again, or he will throw another tantrum. I've resorted to hiding some of his more annoying books, or making up words because he really doesn't care what I read as long as he gets to turn the pages, and when you spend all day with a 1 yr old, the last thing you want to do is read the same children's book over and over.

This morning J gave me a book, and then picked up his drum sticks. I opened the book, read the 1st page, and then half turned the page for him and waited for him to finish turning the page. He looked at the book, then at the drumsticks, and gave me this sad look as if saying "I really want to change the page, but I so don't want to give up the drumsticks." He the proceeded to change the pages using the drumstick...so cute!

Jayden's favorite place

Friday Flashback

I love looking back at pictures of Jayden from when he was a little baby -- he was so little and innocent and we were so clueless about everything. I'm going to try and post a "friday flashback" every Friday so I can appreciate how quickly our little man is growing and changing.

We took this picture exactly a year ago (he was just under 3 weeks old) to document Jayden's 1st time "sleeping" in his crib. It was also back in the day when we swaddled him every time we put him to sleep. That only lasted for a few more weeks as we quickly realized Jayden was not a fan of the swaddle (and also wasn't a fan of sleeping). He now sleeps 12-13 hrs a night and is getting so big that he can no longer fit in his crib laying sideways. Boy, it's crazy how much things have changed in a year.

Why our house is always a mess...

YumYum= MomMom

Every morning Jayden eats a yogurt for breakfast. Lately I've started to say yum yum every time I give him a spoonful of his yogurt, and Jayden will eat it, look at me and smile, and say "mom mom"... and I just smile and say "good job son!"

On this historic night...a letter from Daddy to his little man

Jayden,

Tonight was a night that made me proud to be an American, and gave me hope for not only my future, but for your future as well. Tonight your country overcame two hundred and fifty years of racism. Tonight everything changed: a black man was elected president.

I hope that this means that you will never question your worth because you are not white. I hope that this means that you believe that anything is possible, and that the old adage that dreams come true is not just a folktale. I hope that you don't see the significance of tonight, as it won't be out of the ordinary to see a black person as a role model and as a person to look up to.

Jayden, most of all I hope that your future is bright and full of promise. This country has, to this point at least, been set up to foil the best intentions of everyone not from a certain level of society. Now there is the opportunity to excel past all previous markers; you can truly succeed and become anything that you wish.

I am proud to be an American for the first time in what seems like forever. I am so happy to see our country move towards what I always wished it would be: colorblind. I promise to do my part to help you become the best man you can, and I hope that the world has moved on from its pettiness and will support your dreams as well.

Love always and forever,
Papa

Barack The Vote

Americans finally have a reason to celebrate...we just made history and elected the 1st ever black president. Who says dreams can't come true. Jayden is currently sleeping in his crib and has no idea what is happening right now, and won't understand the importance of this day for a long long time, but I wanted to document this historic day for him. Thank you America for finally getting it right!
